Joining The Race
The Centennial Cup Race is open to all sailboat skippers having boats equipped with state and federal mandated safety equipment, and willing to participate in accordance with the Massachusetts Bay Sailing Association Notice of Race and General Sailing Instructions, and with specific instructions as noted below. PHRF NE handicaps will be used for scoring, with time-on-time correction. Spinnakers are allowed, with racing handicap and with 10% added to the rating of non-spinnaker boats.
All boats must pre-register on-line at by September 6, 2007. Registration is not available on the day of the race.
Fees
Entry fees are waived for Nahant Dory Club members who have paid the annual racing fee;
The fee for Dory Club Members who have not paid the annual fee is $20.00;
The fee for non-members is $25.00;
Make check payable to “Nahant Dory Club” and remit to Nahant Dory Club, P.O. Box 114, Nahant, MA 01908.
Date and Time
The race will commence on or about noon on Saturday, September 8, 2007. At this time it is planned to have only one class start. The maximum time allowed to complete the race is four hours.
Tentative times, flags, and horn signals will be made as follows:
12:00: Five minute warning, yellow flag hoisted and horn signal;
12:01: Preparatory warning, blue flag hoisted and horn signal;
12:04: One minute warning, blue flag removed and horn signal;
12:05: Start signal, yellow flag removed and horn signal.
The Course
The following marks comprise the Centennial Cup Race course. Leave all marks to starboard. Approximate distances and bearings are provided for reference only. Each skipper shall determine the proper course to sail to each mark. Photocopies of the race course on a Broad Sound chart will be available at the Dory Club prior to the race. The course may be shortened due to weather on the day of the race. Notices will be provided on VHF Channel 69.
Start line: Between Joe Beach Buoy (DJB) to port and the committee boat to starboard. The start line will be arranged such that boats will cross the line moving away from land (ie, bearing from 130o to 240o, depending on wind).
1st Mark: RW “BG”, approximately 3.0 nm @ 138o;
2nd Mark: South Channel Can G “3”, approximately 2.8 nm @ 240o;
3rd Mark: Nahant Rock Can G “1”, approximately 3.5 nm @ 342o;
4th Mark: Shag Rocks Buoy R “2”, approximately 1.9 nm @ 93o;
5th Mark: Flip Rock Can RG “FR”, approximately 1.0 nm @ 250o
Finish Line: Between the Pilot Buoy and the Dory Club Flagpole, crossing from the last mark, approximately 0.9 nm @ 38o.
Total distance approximately 13.1 nm (mark to mark).
After the Race Festivities and Awards
Scoring will be completed immediately following the race. A reception will be held for skippers and crew at the Dory Club. Chowder and beverages will be provided by the Dory Club, and a memento award will be given to each skipper who has pre-registered and participated.
The winning skipper’s name will be engraved on the Centennial Cup Race bowl, a perpetual trophy to be maintained by the Dory Club.
Additional Information
Monitor Channel 69 on the day of the race for any additional instructions or changes.
High tide will occur at 9:41 am; low tide will occur at 3:32 pm in Nahant on the 8th.
